"Dublin emigre Susan McKownsn shuttles between ancient Celtic tune structures and pomo-Kate Bush ephemera" -- The Village Voice ". . . the Chanting House...link(s) Ireland's musical past with its future. We write the songs using the rhythms of jigs and reels, but at the same time they are unmistakably rock songs," says Chanting House lead singer Susan McKeown. "Traditional music is dear to me, but it's up to the new generation to see how it's carried down." -- Time Magazine "deftly blending Irish music with urban folk-rock" -- Interview Magazine "(her music) will help link Ireland's musical past with its future" - Time Magazine "Equal parts folk flavored songwriter and alternative rock chanteuse, her debut album Bones is arrestingly original" - The Boston Globe Susan McKeown (mick-yone) was invited to study opera by Ireland's leading local trainer when she was 16. Instead she took to busking (street singing) - a popular occupation for young musicians in her native Dublin - and exploring rock, folk, and jazz. Today the country's leading music magazine Hot Press calls her "a superb singer whose visits to this side of the Atlantic are relished by those in the know." Susan was first introduced to American listeners when her song If I Were You from the Scotti Bros. compilation Straight Outta Ireland was one of the most popular tracks on radio. Time noted that Susan's was "an act of strong potential," and she has since appeared on compilations The Leak, Upsalapalooza, The Folk Next Door, and Oasis Acoustics II. Susan's band The Chanting House, founded originally in Dublin, has evolved from a traditionally oriented project into an acoustic-rock band which blends progressive, jazz and celtic influences. The band's current collective resume includes work with the Lounge Lizards, Don Byron, Boukman Ekspeyrans, Butch Morris, Marianne Faithfull, Andy Stratman and members of the Chieftains and the Bothy Band. McKeown herslef has performed with Sinead O'Connor, Hector Zazu, Hothouse Flowers, Donal Lunny, Mary Margaret O'Hara and Johnny Cunningham. Susan has a solid East Coast touring base, regularly performing to sold-out audiences at such prestigious venues as The Bottom Line, Fez, Passim, The Iron Horse and Godfrey Daniels. She made her Falcon Ridge Festival debut on the mainstage this summer and her current touring schedule includes dates across the US and Europe.
