Women's vocal and instrumental dance music from the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Libana is an ensemble dedicated to rediscovering women's ancient and often undocumented musical heritage.
Libana, New England's international touring world music ensemble, has just begun its seventeenth season with a 3-week tour performing in Bulgaria and Greece, highlighted by a special invitation to perform at the Varna International Folk Festival. Whether at home or abroad, the women of Libana present an exhilarating cross-cultural performance, weaving together the songs, dances and instrumental music of the world's cultures, especially as handed down through the artistic traditions of women.
The power of Libana is centered in their versatility. Ensemble members are equally versed in a capella Bulgarian vocal music, the percussive styling of an Egyptian zar, and the traditional singing of Berber women in Algeria. Exquisite Balkan harmonies, frenzied Egyptian drumming and ritual dancing, poignant and graceful Hawaiian melodies and the rooted pulses of African and Latin rhythms are among the cultural expressions that are united to evoke a spirit of determination and joy.
