Celtic Rock
Celtic Folk-Rock with Irish Tex-Mex Cajun Flavor !
This five-piece band from Tucson perform original songs written by Nancy McCallion; many of a Celtic influence, but also increasingly influenced by Tex-Mex. Four-part vocals with an acoustic front line (accordion, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, acoustic guitar, bouzouki, banjo) and a rockin' rhythm section (electric bass and drums). The Mollys have played top folk and Celtic festivals in the US and Canada, as well as top showcase clubs, such as The Bottom Line in New York and Club Passim.
Nancy McCallion and Catherine Zavala grew up in the blue collar, primarily Hispanic south side of Tuscon Arizona where Mexican-American Mariachi and country western music were prevalent. Nancy McCallion, the main songwriter for the group, is a first generation Irish-American and as a young child lived with her Irish grandmother in Scotland. McCallion took a great interest in Irish literature and music and sometimes uses stories from her father and grandmother in her songwriting as well as stories about people in the Southwest where she now lives.
Catherine Zavala grew up in a bilingual Mexican-American family. The Mexican influence can be heard in both her singing and her guitar and mandolin playing.
They have two CDs "Tidings of Comfort and Joy," and the recent release, "This Is My Round." The Mollys are also featured on Putamayo's "Women of the World: Celtic" CD.
