The Pops Are Back In Town!!
Boston Pops concerts are performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra, which is composed of members
of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (except for twelve of the principal players, who tour during the
Pops season as the Boston Symphony Chamber Players), and by the Boston Pops Esplanade
Orchestra, made up of other Boston-based musicians. Both orchestras represent the city of Boston on
tour.
The spring season of the Boston Pops takes place during May and June in Symphony Hall, where the
floor seats are removed and replaced by tables seating five each. A menu of light refreshments,
sandwiches, and snacks is available for patrons at tables. The inimitable Pops style, comprising light
classics, rousing marches, favorite themes from film and Broadway scores, as well as hits from Tin Pan
Alley and the Big Band era, appeals to all ages and musical tastes. Boston Pops concerts take place
nightly Tuesday through Sunday at Symphony Hall.
Capping each Pops season are free performances on the Esplanade, highlighted by the annual
Fourth-of-July concert and the climactic performance of the "1812" Overture complete with cannons
and fireworks. The Boston Pops also performs at Tanglewood each summer and returns to Symphony
Hall in December for an extremely popular annual series of Christmas Pops concerts and a New
Year's Eve gala. The total regular live audience for the Pops concerts and the free Esplanade concerts
-- excluding the special July 4 event, which itself draws the attendance of some 225,000 -- exceeds a
quarter of a million annually.
