The Charles River Kin (CRK) have been serving up a wicked blend of Blues & Soul to live audiences in New England recently, and they seem poised to fight their way to the top of the Boston music scene in the weeks ahead.
Formed out of a blues jam at the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel by drummer Lyall Croft and guitarist/vocalist Jim Ambrose, the band has assembled an energetic performance repertoire that features material by legends like Howlin' Wolf, Wilson Picket and Bo Diddley. They have been paying their dues with sweat and blood in local blues joints and their gritty determination has been paying off. In November of '96, CRK traveled to New Orleans where they performed for the United States Marine Corps' 220th Birthday Ball. While in town, they gigged at the Rhythm & Blues Club on Bourbon Street. In February '97, Holly Harris featured CRK in the "Local Artist Spotlight" on her weekly WBOS (92.9FM) blues program.
In addition to Croft and Ambrose, the band includes saxophonist Dan "the Tenor Man" Sullivan, keyboardist Don "Riverboat" Reed and bassist Chick "Chicklet" Deptula. While all of the members are accomplished musicians, the emphasis in this band is on the rhythm. Don't expect to just watch these guys and stand around with a drink in your hand. The grooves that they cook up require a seatbelt and drivers' side airbag for those brave enough to hit the dance floor!
The Charles River Kin have a five song demo tape available at all their gigs and a mailing list for all interested to get on. A CD release is planned for this fall, and they will continue to hone their craft in clubs throughout New England. The band is also available for private parties and weddings.
