Plenty of bands these days count the Rolling Stones as a musical
influence, but few could actually count one of them as a musical
collaborator - Northern California's Walkie Talkie can do just that: Lead
singer Jim Lacey-Baker teamed up with former Stone Mick Taylor and
formed a friendship in song that formed the basis for Walkie Talkie's
debut album, "School Yard Rhymes": "I've never really been involved in
a project where I could put my hand on my heart and say I'm really
keen on the music," Taylor says, "One of the things that attracted me to
the music was his confidence: he has a way of playing that is very natural - it's effortless. When we
actually got into the studio, the way I felt about the music confirmed: It sounds fresh and it sounds
inspired which will come across in the music and people will hopefully buy it." (p.s. this means you) The
music of Walkie Talkie is at once raucous and kind; soothing vocals from Jim Lacey-Baker and Dani
Francis blend genuine folk wisdom with a pop/alternative sentiment that rocks gently with heavy melodies
- Their sound has led some to include them in the recent neo-country rock revival, with the likes of
WILCO & 16 Horsepower. Was the young Lacey-Baker intimidated in working with one of his idols?
"He came in and crashed on our couch after we jammed til 3am - I have the first time we actually spoke
about writing songs on tape, so that I would believe it was real later."
