Following the collapse of doom metal titans Sleep, guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike formed High on Fire with bass player George Rice and drummer Des Kensel in 1999. Their first collaboration, The Art of Self-Defense, was released by Man's Ruin Records the following year. Garnering a significant amount of press for their sludgy riffs and ungodly heavy bass tones, the group emerged from their quiet two years later to drop Surrounded by Thieves. Ed Rivadavia
