From the Wassoulou region of southern Mali, Oumou Sangare is arguably the world's best-known Wassoulou singer and one of Mali's most accomplished artists. With a clear, glorious alto voice, she creates a modern sound by reworking ancient Wassoulou instruments with electric bass, guitar and violin. Traditionally this music was performed by hunters to charm the wild animals and invoke the protecting spirits, but Ms. Sangare's lyrics focus on themes of love and the problems of young women living in African cities today.
