Lebanese composer and oud master, Marcel Khalife creates beautiful, universal expressions by combining centuries of musical heritage with a contemporary blend of western styled instrumentation. He conducts his Al Mayadine ensemble, a quartet consisting of two ouds, bass, guitar and riq (tambourine), like an orchestra, guiding it through vivid contrasting sections, fiery grooves, melancholy lyrical passages and propulsive rhythms. The impact of the music is enhanced by the remarkable, interactive virtuosity of Khalife and his longtime associate, oud player Charbel Rouhana. Working with an almost symbolic linkage, the two artists soar - individually and in tandem - through peformances resembling the swirling, interlaced and endlessly fascinating richness of Arabic calligraphy.
