Driveway- The Vanishing Eye Trick
3 Song Cassette Single
Produced by B.M. and Driveway
Engineered by Brian McElroy
Recorded February 1996 at Newbury Sound, Boston MA
Driveway`s three song "cassingle" is engaging and common. Common in that it could be easily mistaken for material that you hear on "FNX" or any other popular alternative radio station. The sound is very simple in its composition but is catchy and moving. Driveway is a four piece band which is comprised of lead female singer and songwriter Cassie Mazza, Matt Paquerella on electric and acoustic guitars, Roger Hodgkins on drums, and Bryon Turcotte on bass. Mazza`a voice is sultry and soft but strongly evocative and reminiscent of a Veruca Salt sound or Tanya Donnelly of Belly in "Full Moon, Empty Heart". The first track, "Hate" has a strong buzz-saw guitar sound that is much like that of Eric Masunaga`s with the Dambuilders on "Smooth Control" or "Teenager Loser Anthem". Grating and high, but intensity building all the same, Paquerella draws the listener close while Mazza sings on. Their sound is cohesive and funky."Lost in Oz" is technically slightly more difficult due to the lengthy downfade and
pause in the middle of the song but it works beautifully. You find yourself hanging on, waiting for it to come back up to full tilt again. Mazza`s vocal burst provides the answer and Hodgkin`s drums fit in tightly with the mix. The lyrics and Mazza`s voice could be brought a bit more to the fore as the strength of the percussion almost drowns her out. And in the track "Lazy Thing" you wouldn`t want to miss the sarcasm and fun which Mazza pokes at a lover --"If you weren`t such a jerk, I might just stick around." As far as demo`s go, this is a good one and the sincerity and strength of the music is a harbinger of more praise to come. Odds are that a live show would be worth taking in to see how the music is conveyed live. -Annette Scott
