Alternative Folk
Emerging from the Northeastern folk scene that provided a training ground for such talents as Patty Larkin, Dar Williams, and Salamander Crossing, twentysomething Mark Erelli was the top choice for best new folk performer at this year's prestigious Kerrville, Texas, music festival. With a distinctive, gritty voice, Erelli paints deliberate portraits of the twists and turns of love with songs such as "One Too Many Midnights," "I Thought I Heard You Knocking," and "Only Wondering Where You Are." Earlier winners of the same Kerrville prize include Nanci Griffith, Tish Hinojosa, and Lyle Lovett, so Erelli's one to keep your eye -- and ear -- on. Kerry Dexter
