| Don Byron |
Jazz
Named Downbeat's Jazz Artist of the Year in 1990, clarinetist/composer Byron topped the Downbeat Critic's Poll for four consecutive years as well as the Reader's Poll in 1995, all while striving for "a sound above genre." His eclectic musical choices include the klezmer music and humor of Mickey Katz and an exploration combining his Afro-Caribbean heritage with his Bronx childhood. His new CD, Bug Music, is on Nonesuch, a progect that presents transcriptions of the swing era music of Raymond Scot, John Kirby and young Duke Ellington and was called by CD Review "an invigorating tribute...with a timeless fervor and a smooth-but-smoking ensemble.
