The Cecil Taylor Trio
Jazz

The playing of avant-grade jazz pianist Taylor has been said to resemble "Niagra Falls, a volcano, a great river, thunderheads, a high wind, a cannonade, a stampede." An organizer of the Jazz Composers' Guild, he performed on the South Lawn of the White House for President Jimmy Carter. He has played with Mac Roach and for Brishnikov, and earlier this year he revised, musicalized and directed Adrienne Kennedy's play A Rat's Mass at New York's La Mama Theatre Annex. Most recently he completed a piece for Dianne McIntyre's dance company, Sounds In Motion, which premiered in New York in May as part of the Alvin Alley American Dance Theatre season. His playing varies rhythmic accent and keyboard texture, employing numerous tonal clusters whose dossonance has no harmonic function-and needs to be experienced to be fully understood. Accompanying Mr. Taylor on this date are Dominic Duval on bass and Jackson Kroll on drums.
