Alternative
Built to Spill hail from the unlikely town of Boise, Idaho. Vocalist/guitarist Doug (sometimes Dug) Martsch's songs sound far out too, mixing Neil Young's plaintive yearning with offbeat melodies and lyrics. Martsch released three albums with the Treepeople before forming Built to Spill. The band's debut album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, was released by C/Z in 1993. Replacing drummer Ralf was bassist Brett Nelson's former Butterfly Train bandmate, drummer Andy Capps, joining for their second album There's Nothing Wrong with Love, which appeared in 1994 on the Up! label. After a split EP with Caustic Resin (also on Up!), Built to Spill signed with Warner Brothers and issued 1997's Perfect from Now On; Keep It Like a Secret followed two years later and a live album was released in 2000. Martsch has also collaborated on a series of albums with Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson as the Halo Benders. John Bush
