Dabrye is one of the aliases of Tadd Mullinix, an Ann Arbor, MI-based producer who carved a niche of his own in the IDM community in early 2001 with Winking Makes a Face (released under his own name), a twisted record that blended a sick sense of humor with some genuine emotion -- with none of the smarminess that plagues most IDM. Later that year, Mullinix unveiled his Dabrye pseudonym with One/Three, the first of a three-part series that skews fractured hip-hop production with a Germanic approach. Falling into some categorical netherworld (Is it trip-hop? Is it tech-house? Is it ber-abstract hip-hop?), tracks from One/Three enjoyed frequent rotation on tastemaker Gilles Peterson's BBC radio program. Instrmntl followed on Scott Herren's (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label in 2002. Andy Kellman
