This feisty sextet of Berklee grads joined together in 1990 to look backwards and mine the rich tradition of New Orleans jazz, from Louis Armstrong to street parades-sometimes providing loving renditions of classic jazz chestnuts, sometimes taking the music on to eclectic reinterpretations. Their first CD, Made in the Shade, on Accurate, was released last year.
Made In The Shade combines elements of traditional New Orleans polyphony and funk with an awareness of modern jazz styles, putting it all together in a catchy, original package. With stage antics and energy to match their musical talents, the group is as much a visual as an aural experience. Daniel Gewertz of the says "The charm of Made In The Shade is the way they play with serious soulfulness, but also know that with great traditional jazz, fun is still the essence... Brilliantly spreading jazz to a new generation." Their new CD Passin' The Hat (released on the group's own Shader Gator label) captures the band at its best, with eight original tunes and four covers.
