Synopsis: In the best surrealist tradition, Bunuel claimed that his brilliant, disconcertingly funny joke - after an upper-class dinner party, the guests find some mysterious compulsion that makes them unable to leave the premises - has no rational explanation whatsoever. Yet vast meanings can be found in his powerful central image of the magnificently appointed bourgeois salon reduced to a garbage-heap. Devastatingly funny, yet surprisingly tender at moments, this film remains one of Bunuel's best.
