Paris Qui Dort: The Crazy Ray Clair's first film exploits stop-motion cinematography in a comedy about a night watchman on the Eiffel Tower who wakes one morning to find the city of Paris asleep below. However, it is the process of filmmaking that is the true subject of this film, and the basic elments of cinema - time and movement - are its chief characters. Clair makes evident his fascination with abstract forms of machinery, by gliding the camera around the steel curves and fretwork of the Eiffel Tower, exploring it from every angle.
Directed by Rene Clair with Henri Rollan, Madeline Rodrigues, Albert Prejean (silent, bw 16mm)
Menilmontant: One of the most famous experimental films of the 1920's, this cine poem combines several styles - ultra rapid montage, static compositions, hand-held camera movements, flashbacks, and superimpositions. Yet its series of visual impressions makes narrative sense and has an emotional impact, and Sibirskaia, a Russian emigre like the director, is remarkable.
Directed by Dimitri Kirsanov with Nadia Sibirskaia, Yolande Beaulieu (silent, bw, 16mm)
