Chronicle of a Summer
Genre:Unclassified

Chronique d'un ete
After years of ethnographic filmmaking in Africa, Rouch joined sociologist Morin to make this nonfiction film about Parisians and their assessments of their lives - a factory worker, a concentration camp survivor, a foreigner working in Paris who uncovers deep depression in herself during the course of the film. Rouch coined the term cinema verite for this work, and the film powerfully influenced documentary and fictional filmmaking everywhere with its use of a light flixible camera in natural settings, its improvisations, and its breaking of the spell of both story and "objectivity" by having people address the camera at length and otherwise participate in the shaping of the film. An intimate, very real work about modern life.

Directed by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin
(French with English subtitles, bw, 35mm)
