Synopsis: Jacob the Liar A Jewish ghetto in Poland, 1943. Having overheard on a Gestapo radio that the Russians are advancing, Jacob spreads the news. Too frightened to divulge his source, he pretends he has an illegal radio and finds himself trapped in a series of lies which he keeps the hopes of his comrades alive. This is the nub of an extraordinary film which questions the value of truth in hopeless situtions. It is remarkable for wringing so much full-blooded absurdly funny comedy from a situation in which every resonance appalls. A superb cast in which Czech star Vlastimil Brodsky shines.
