: Singer/Songwriters
Lucy Kaplansky has a voice unlike anyone else recording today. It is fluid, agile, and strong. Although her voice distinctively speaks 'today', Lucy was raised on earlier generations of great singer-songwriters -- Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Jackson Browne. Crucial influences came from the voices of Mary McCaslin and Cindy Magsen, women whose singing knocked Lucy out, and who continue to influence her style today. Her love of harmonies was sparked by Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, and the amazing vocal synthesis they produced in their too short collaboration.
Since the beginning of her career, critics have envisioned a big future for singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky. John Rockwell of The New York Times was one of the first, observing that it would be easy to predict stardom for her. When you hear her sing, his reasoning becomes clear. She has a voice unlike anyone else recording today. It is fluid, agile, and strong, and when she joins it with another, as she does with Shawn Colvin on "The Tide", the hamonies are delightful.
"(Lucy Kaplansky) is clearly among the largest talents on the acoustic scene today." -- Associated Press
