The group came together in the early '60s under the leadership of a gentle visionary, Joseph Shabalala. Shabalala's lithe alto voice coos and growls above two tenors and seven basses. Ladysmith Black Mambazo's strong, proud melodies, harmonized in layers of call and response, continue to thrill audiences around the world.
