Walkabout
Genre:Drama
Year:1971
Rating:?
Cast:Jenny Agutter, Lucien John and David Gumpilil
Credits:Directed by Nicholas Roeg.

Synopsis: Cinematographer Nicholas Roeg's stunning directorial debut is this odyssey of three children: Two properly civilized English youngsters find themselves abandoned in the Australian outback. They hook up with an Aboriginal boy who is on his walkabout (an adolescent male rite of passage, where he must survive alone in the bush for and extended period of time). Knowing nothing of each other's culture and language, the trio forms a most curious family and travels mile upon mile across the Australian bush country to reach "civilization."

It is the sophisticated English children who are lost in the primitive surroundings and must be rescued by the pre-literate black Abo who is totally at home with nature. It is through the graceful young Abo, leading them with total confidence out of the wilderness, that the children learn the truth, magic, beauty and joy of the natural life - the one that modern man has sacrificed in the name of progress.

Upon its initial release the critics wrote:
"Inexprssibly beautiful - The richest and most provocative of recent films." (Life Magazine)

"A movie that celebrates life. Full of lovely things." (New York Times)

"A film of rare subtley and Lyric beauty." (Newsweek).

Now over 25 years later, this film's themes of spiritual journey and cultural identity seems to resonate even more powerfully in the late nineties.
