Synopsis:
Considered both Carne's and screenwriter Jacques Prevert's best work, this romantic epic explores the loves and ambitions of a group of actors who eventually achieve fame, but never the happiness they so desperately seek. Pantomime, acrobatics and the popular spectacles of the mid-nineteenth century are used to dramatize an entire epoch in the life and theater.
