Born in Villa Rica, Georgia in 1899, Thomas Dorsey started writing blues when he was still a teenager and went on to perform with Ma Rainey. In 1920 he started to write blues influenced "gospel" songs, writing what has become the most popular gospel song Take my Hand, Precious Lord in 1932.
The Birthplace choir is composed of members of a number of congregations in West Georgia.
