Synopsis: Arthur Penn's (Bonnie and Clyde, Alice's Restaurant) first feature film in seven years is a powerful portrait of South Africa's healing process after years of racist rule. As part of the recovery, Nelson Mandela's government has developed the "Truth and Reconciliation Commission," an agency devoted to investigating the atrocities committed under apartheid. With this as the focus, INSIDE tells the fictional story of Marty, a white university professor from a prominent family, who was arrested in the mid '80s after attending an Amnesty International concert in Zimbabwe. Wrongfully accused of treason, Marty is held in prison and interrogated by a ruthless police officer committed to keeping apartheid in tact.
The story moves back and forth between this horrific tale and the justice that eventually takes place many years later. With riveting performances all around, the film is a moving look into a part of recent history that drastically needs to be explored and reconciled.
"Literally, the title of INSIDE refers to Marty's life in prison. This taut and demanding film goes beyond that to depict the way power in South Africa has been turned inside out." - Caryn James, The New York Times
