Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, and the first to cross the North American continent alone. Her exploits as an aviator, coupled with her intelligence and charm, made her a national heroine. In 1937, while attempting to fly aroung the world, her plane disappeared with out a trace.
