Synopsis
The basic premise of Steven Spielberg's sequel to Jurassic Park, the highest grossing film of all time, is that John Hammond's genetically engineered dinosaurs are alive and well on a densely jungled Costa Rican island located 80 miles from Isla Nublar, the home of the original Jurassic Park. Ailing and no longer in charge of the Ingen Corp., Hammond (Richard Attenborough reprising his role) begs cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum, also returning) to join a small expedition to the island to observe and photograph the creatures. The acerbic Malcolm refuses until he learns that his paleontologist girlfriend Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) is already there. Fearing for her life, he heads off with operations specialist Eddie Carr (Richard Schiff) and environmental warrior/documentary filmmaker Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn). Bringing with them specially equipped almost dino-proof RV's (but for the tragic flaw of having a plate glass back window rather than the traditional safety glass) and other gew gaws. Once upon the island, Ian discovers that his feisty 11-year-old daughter Kelly has stowed away. No sooner does he discover that, than the sky fills with helicopters carrying in a veritable army of Ingen thugs who have come to capture a few dinosaurs to bring back to a new zoo facility in San Diego, California. The army is led by ruthless great-white hunter Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite), whose one desire is to bag himself a bull Tyrannosaur. In one of the film's most breathtaking special-effects sequences, Tembo leads a regimen of jeeps, motorcycles, and trucks through a huge stampeding herd of panicked thunder lizards. If Ian and his environmentally conscious crew cannot stop Tembo and his group, both dinosaurs and innocent San Diego residents could be threatened. Though it sports a high-tech combination of dramatically improved computer generated images and incredibly expressive animatronic dinosaurs, its focus on unrelenting and predictable action precludes notions of genuine suspense plot cohesion and character development, making it a lot like a T-Rex with dull teeth.
