Symopsis
Winner of the Best First Feature Award at Venice, Suleiman's film is divided in two parts: "Nazareth Personal Diary," and "Jerusalem Political Diary." Together they comprise director's strikingly creative search for his roots and his reflections on the spiritual affect of the Middle East political impasse on the Palestinian people, their psyche, and their identity. In this enthusuastic Voice review, J. Hoberman called the film "elegant, serenely ironic" and compared it with Jim Harmisch's Stranger Than Paradise and Suleiman to Jacques Tati, Chantal Akerman and Jim Benning.
