Synopsis
A man's faithful secretary probes the dark and dangerous cityscape to prove that her boss did not muder his wife. Sidmark's first film noir defines many of the visual devices now endemic to the genre, as well as introducing, along with Fritz Lanf, the stylistics of German Expressionism to a stubbornly American art form. "Intercutting shots of Elisha Cook, Jr., reaching orgiastic fervor as he climaxes his drum solo with shots of the wordless sexual innuendoes of Ella Raines, Siodmak brilliantly interweaves expressionistic decor with American art idiom. If watched without sound, the scene could be from one of the classic German films of the 1920's." - Alain Silver, Film Noir
