The fascinating fresh perspective on Albert Schweitzer, the Nobel Prize winner whose pre-Mother Teresa life virtually defined humanitarian work, looks at the secular saint's last 25 years. Shot on the site of Schweitzer's hospital in Gabon, this "challenging" film "is painstaking in its recreation of period detail and its utterly unromantic way of portraying African villagers, European technicians, and tribal elders". While ba Kobhio successfully and provocatively rewrites the history of colonialism from the point of view of the colonized, this isn't a mere diatribe, but rather a deeply-felt lament of a missed opportunity for a cros-cultural erncounter between Africa and Europe.
