Synopsis
Schlondorf's debut feature turned against the fatal constellations of the Aderauer era, its impersonal and mindless film productions, its evasions of political problems and vacations from history. It reverted to the distant past of Robert Musil's famous novella of 1906, offering a less obvious contribution to the definitive postwar project in Germany, that of "comming to term with the past." The period piece provides an oblique reckoning with the legacy of the Third Reich: its penetrating study of young cadets in an Austrian military academy offers a preview of coming facist attractions. The directors work received warm priase at the Cannes Film Festival for its critical inciseveness and formal precision. Young Torless has gone down in film history as a seminal work that announced a new German cinema of international stature.
