Synopsis
"Douglas Sirk's last film. The first great moment: ANnie tells Lana Turner that Sarah Jane is her daughter. Annie is black and Sarah is almost white. Lana Turner hesitates, understands, still hesitates, and then quickly acts as though it were the most natural thing in the world for a black woman to have a white daughter. But nothing is natural. Never. Not throughout the entire film. And yet everyone tries compusively to consider his thoughts or wishes his own...Not one of the protagonists realizes that all these things - thoughts, wishes, dreams - grow directly out of their social reality or are manupulated by it. I don't know any other film that shows this phenomenon so clearly and so despairingly."
