The Average White Band is probably one of the most sampled bands ever (over 70 "borrowing" artists). Who doesn't remember the killer "Pick Up The Pieces" or "Cut The Cake" classics on Atlantic? Scottish roots and blue-eyed soul perhaps, but the heart of the music was drawn from Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stax and Motown: soulful vocals, tight horn arrangements, and a locked-in groove. Ten albums and a large multi-racial following was the legacy. Come judge the music for yourself.
