Synopsis
This film brought feminist filmmaking to the fore in a monumental way, and established Akerman as one of the world's great directors. The film documents the life of Jeanne Dielman (Seyrig) in her apartment as she does the daily chores, looks after her school-boy son, engages in prostitution to help pay the bills, and eventually revolts against her life. It is an amazing recreation of details - the sense of passing time - of everyday life, and works more generally as a parable of the plight of women in modern day society. The cinematography is at once unassuming and very conscious and weighted; Seyrig's great performance is both very real and also theatricaly hypnotic. "For a long time, I could not deal with Jeanne Dielman. It's the kind of film you do at the end of your life and I made it when I was 24."
