Synopsis Yuppie drug dealers fight it out with ruthless
street competitors in Nick (Laws of Gravity)
Gomez's latest stylish urban drama. Featuring
strong performances from Rapaport and Corrigan as
the enterprising leads, Illtown has a dreamy,
druggie atmosphere that flows from the heroin use
of several characters. But it becomes a bad scene
pronto when a former partner (Trese) gets out of
the klink and sets up a little deadly competition.
More interesting than the rampages of Trese's
sociopath and numerous killings are the twisted
domestic life of Rapaport's likable antihero and
his loyal girlfriend (Taylor). But as Gomez turns
up the violence, he jettisons a lot of
credibility, and in the end, this aptly titled
movie is undone by its excesses and
eccentricities.
