Packed to the gills with laughs, this nearly two-hour collection of stories from Nickelodeon's phenomenally popular animated series will make a big splash with Spongebob fans. Break out the popcorn, the soda, and the pickled garlic, and join Patchy the Pirate as he premieres the very special "Lost Episode" of Spongebob Squarepants (so-called because he's the one who lost it!). Spongebob soars to new heights in "The Sponge Who Could Fly," a musical extravaganza in which our blissfully porous hero's dreams of flying with jellyfish make him a laughingstock, then a hero, to the underwater citizens of Bikini Bottom. "Plankton" introduces the microscopic villain who will stop at nothing to get the secret recipe to the krabby patty. In "Boating School," Spongebob's hopes of passing his boat-driving exam are sunk when he unwittingly cheats. In the bubbly "Suds," a miserable Spongebob learns that a sponge who treats himself has a fool for a doctor. Next, "Mermaidman and Barnacleboy II" reteams Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway as the voices of Spongebob's favorite Saturday morning TV superheroes, who find themselves at the mercy of contest winner Spongebob. In "The Chaperone," short, yellow and spongy Spongebob transforms himself into long, tan, and handsome when Mr. Krab recruits him to be his daughter Pearl's prom date. In "Bubble Buddy," things get even weirder than usual when Spongebob pops up with his new friend, a bubble. Spongebob goes "knots" when he forgets how to tie his shoelaces in "Your Shoe's Untied." Finally, bikini-clad squirrel Sandy's way-extreme "Prehibernation Week" activities force Spongebob into hiding. This subversively funny series skewers TV conventions with a verbal ingenuity that recalls the heyday of Rocky and Bullwinkle and very clever animation. For those who have yet to take the plunge, this collection will anchor a Spongebob video library. Donald Liebenson
