This comedy is quite a change for Hong Kong martial arts hero Jet Li. Li plays Chow, the writer of a pulp-style adventure serial, who seems to be failing in both his career and his marriage to Monica (Rosamund Kwan). The film also enacts out Chow's story as he writes it: Li also plays the fictional Dr. Wai, a daring adventurer in the tradition of Doc Savage or Indiana Jones. As Chow tries to churn out his story, Dr. Wai pursues a mysterious scroll called "The Scripture Without Words"; the film's transitions between reality and fantasy is reminiscent of films such as Brazil and The Princess Bride.
