Onetime New York subway operator Green (Martin Balsam) masterminds an extortion plot against his former employers. Together with co-conspirators Blue, Grey and Brown (Robert Shaw, Hector Elizondo and Earl Hindman), Blue boards a subway train in disguise, holds the occupants hostage, and calls the main transit office with his demands. Chief controller Lt. Garber (Walter Matthau) listens intently as Blue insists upon receiving a million-dollar ransom in one hour--or he'll shoot one hostage per minute. As the authorities close in, Blue starts to make good his threat. The money is delivered, and the subway car is sent careening down the rails without brakes. The extortion scheme rapidly falls apart once Lt. Garber tracks down Blue, but Green absconds with the money. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three was based on the bestselling novel by John Godey.
