A slick, sexy thriller punctuated with Hitchcockian plot twists, Malice narrowly skirts the bounds of believability, thanks to the skillful performances of its starring triad. Likable Bill Pullman is well cast as the New England college professor whose campus is being menaced by a mysterious rapist, and whose wife, Nicole Kidman, is suffering from unexplainable abdominal pain. Fortunately, their new boarder, Alec Baldwin, happens to be a brilliant, if arrogant, surgeon who performs a life-saving operation on the ailing spouse -- with unexpected and disturbing results. Director Harold Becker (Sea of Love) freely borrows characterizations and narrative devices from earlier suspense films, but his seamless interpolations actually enhance what could have been a very silly story. Pullman and Kidman perform convincingly, as do the supporting players, distinguished veterans George C. Scott and Anne Bancroft and relative newcomers Bebe Neuwirth, Peter Gallagher, and Gwyneth Paltrow. It's Baldwin, though, who takes top acting honors with his suave turn as the sinister surgeon.
