Enemies of iconoclastic producer-director Josef Von Sternberg must have been delighted beyond measure when he ended up directing Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in RKO's Macao. Set against the murkily exotic backdrops of gambling dens, cheap hotels and sinister waterfronts, the story involves the various adventures experienced by fugitive from justice Nick Cochran (Mitchum) and cabaret singer Julie Benson (Russell). Naturally, no one can be trusted in the course of events, not even the stars. A subplot--which ultimately evolves into the main plot--concerns the efforts of incognito detective Lawrence Trumble (William Bendix) to bring crooked gambler Brad Dexter (Halloran) to justice. After a series of disappointing previews, director Nicholas Ray was called in to reshoot several scenes in Macao. Hal Erickson
