13-year-old Amy Alden (The Piano's Anna Paquin) survives an accident that kills her mother and goes to live with her estranged father (Jeff Daniels), who was last seen when she was three. Uprooted from New Zealand to southern Ontario, apathetic, angry Amy sulks as her artist/inventor father makes stuff in his studio. When a local developer destroys a Canada-geese habitat, Amy adopts the orphaned goslings. Together, her and her father bond when they teach the geese to fly.
