Taiwan urban youth subculture is the study of Tsai Ming-liang, who made his directorial debut at age 35 with this film. Hsiao-kang, living with his parents, is unable to carry on a conversation with his father, while his mother resorts to occult Taoism to interpret her son's frightening and bewildering behavior. The youth make the best of their maze-like latenight world of motorcycles, video arcades, and petty crime, recognizing on some level that there is no way out. Driven almost entirely by characterization rather than plot, the film's drifting progression mirrors the desultory lives of its characters, who can look only to themselves for human comfort in the alien, post-modern underbelly of Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan.
DIRECTED BY TSAI MING-LIANG With Cen Chao-jeng, Wang Yu-wen, Lee Kang-shen (Chinese with English subtitles, color, 35mm)
