Land of Silence and Darkness
Genre:Documentary
Rating:?
Credits:DIRECTED BY WERNER HERZOG

Land of Silence and Darkness... A key but often neglected work, this extraordinary feature-length documentary brings Herzog's metaphysical, fantastical outlook to bear on the impenetrable world of the deaf-and-blind.
The film's subject is 56-year-old Fini Straubinger, blind and deaf since adolescence, who late in life became an activist seeking to liberate others similarly afflicted. Herzog illuminates this uncharted "land of silence and darkness" with an intensity that is startling and genuinely heartrending; at the same time, he fashions "a grotesque vision of human futility" (David Cook), a vision that stresses "the innately damaged quality of man as being natural, essential, and insuperable" (David Thomson).
