A tramp, saved from drowning by a bookseller and taken into the latter's home, sets about seducing his rescuer's wife and mistress (the maid), before retreating thankfully to the banks of the Marne. The last and the best of the four films that Renoir made with the extraordinary simian-faced Michel Simon, is an exhilarating mixture of farce and drama through which runs the spirit of anarchy fighting bourgeois convention. The sense of Paris in the summer is heightened by the deep focus photography and direct sound.
