This film, which weaves the stories of two former British track runners who were both victorious in major events of the 1924 Paris Olympics, is about the will and motivation to win. Charleson and Cross play the respective runners, each driven by impulses that have less to do with fame and national honor than with the struggles of religion and race in the early 1900's. Hudson creates an admirable narrative style, combining slow motion and freeze frames with an evocative soundtrack, using his nominal subjects as occasions for much larger statements about human nature.
