Pasolini's own translation of the original Sophocles play is an attempt to confront both the problem of psychoanalysis and the problem of myth. Conceived as a "metaphoric" autobiography, the film emphasizes the relationship between father and son, rather than the more personal, interior relationship between mother and son. The myth itself is treated as a dream set in the Moroccan dessert in parenthesis between 'Oedipal' scenes in modern Bologna.
