Set in a remote, tight-knit community on the rugged north coast of Scotland, Lars Von Trier's new film is the story of Bess, an innocent young woman who marries an oil-rig worker shortly before a cataclysmic occurence alters both their lives.
Awarded the Jury Prize at Cannes, this harshly beautiful elegy to physical passion and spiritual transcendence features a heart-breaking, star-making performance by newcomer Emily Watson as Bess, whose very existence seems to stir up the passions long denied by her strict Calvinist community. Employing a hand-held camera throughout, the images bleached of much of their color, cinematographer Robby Muller underlines the stark contrast between the characters' passions and the timeless, wild beauty of the Scottish landscape.
