Synopsis: Inspired by actual events, Cuban-born director Leon Ichaso weaves fact and fiction into an emotionally compelling story about two young people who fall madly in love, despite their radically opposed political views. The film is set in modern-day Havana where Yolanda (a beautiful and streetwise young dancer) and Gustavo (an idealistic honor student and believer in the Castro regime) develop an intense relationship amidst a city bursting at the seams.

As the two become each other's only salvation, they cannot ignore the mounting political chaos that starts to surround them and their families. When the harsh realities of a repressive society begins to take its toll on the young lovers, the story develops into an alarming expose on the drastic and provocative measures that today's Cuban youth culture feel forced to embrace.

"BITTER SUGAR is a movie about life . . . and about dreams going wrong," says the director who based the story on the lives of family members, people he met, and people he read about. "Every character in the film is a composite of different people. This is the story of many people in Cuba."
