Synopsis:
Once described as the "Rimbaud of French Cinema," Philippe Garrel has long been championed in Europe for a body of work little seen in the United States. In The Birth Of Live, he focuses on the emotional ecology of family life, from the point of view of the 45-year-old man Garrel was when he made the film. Two "faces" of a previous generation of young screen icons - Lou Castel and Jean-Pierre Leuad - turn in vivid performances as men who are mature in years, but are perhaps more than a little arrested emotionally. Raoul Courtard, Godard's longtime cameraman, turns an illuminating eye on their very thoughts in this deeply moving investigation of love. The felicate solo piano score is musician John Cale. "Garrel's extensive career constitutes oneof the most intensely poetic, sentient and singularly authentic voices in contemporary cinema." (John Giavito).
